Venice of the East - Backwaters

Alleppey is famous for it's backwaters. You can travel miles and miles through canals by the Vembanad lake. The Vambanad lake is one of the largest fresh water lakes in Asia.Seen in the above left picture is the Punnamada lake on which the Nehru Boat race is conducted. The race starts at the far end of the lake (around 1.5 kms away). Also, seen are the boat houses which are present on this lake. The right side picture is me with the ending post of the race behind me.

Backwaters - My Journey

The ride through the backwaters is beautiful. I was lucky to see 2 snake boats being towed to the races. The backwaters also leads to the greenest parts of Alleppey - the paddy belt.

Alleppey Beach

My first impression of Alleppey Beach is that "IT STINKS" and impression remained till I left. The beach has a very pungent smell and though the sand on the beach is white and soft, the waves had a very dirty kind of look. Not surprising that I found no one wading in the sea.

Mullackal Bhagavati Temple

Mullackal temple is in the heart of city. It is built in the traditional kerala style. It was unfortunately closed when I visited it.

Ambalapuzha - Krishna Temple

Amabalapuzha is 14 kms away from Alapuzha. The krishna temple is a very beautiful temple built in the traditional style.

Katangaparambu Temple

I was bored with temples built in the traditional kerala style. Temple in the dravidian style were much rarer. This temple (I am sure that I got the name wrong) had a the life story of Krishna painted on the roof inside the temple.
