A picture of the Gol Gumbaz (Tomb of Muhammad Adil Shah) at Bijapur. The dome of the Gol Gumbaz is second largest in the world. The dome combined with gaps in the flooring which leads to a basement, provides a unique acoustics inside the gumbaz. The slightest sound made upstairs (called the whispering gallery) can be heard clearly downstairs and a clap echoes over 10 times. I don't know why this was designed so, but, the most absurd reason I heard was that the king wanted hear grumblings against him. The Gumbaz was built as his tomb. Why would he have problems hearing grumblings against him after he was DEAD! beats me!
